Evolution of corneal thickness and optical density after laser in situ keratomileusis vs small incision lenticule extraction for myopia correction

British Journal of Ophthalmology Oct 01, 2020

del Barrio JLA, Parafita-Fernandez A, Canto-Cerdan M, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective study to compare the thickness and stromal optical density (OD) evolution of the flap and cap after femtosecond (FS-LASIK; Visumax) and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), respectively, for myopia correction. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (MS39) images have been obtained at each postoperative visit (1 day, 1 week and 1 and 3 months) and flap/cap thicknesses have been measured. According to findings, both LASIK flaps and SMILE caps display substantial postoperative rethickening. In the early postoperative period, SMILE corneas exhibit higher optical densities than LASIK corneas, with a substantial decrease thereafter and for up to 3 months. Such results are consistent with the delayed visual recovery observed after SMILE.
