Evidence of heterogeneity in statin-associated type 2 diabetes mellitus risk: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and observational studies

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Apr 12, 2019

Engeda JC, et al. - A meta-analysis of statin-associated type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) risk among randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies (OBSs) was conducted by researchers, excluding studies conducted among secondary prevention populations. Twenty-three studies (35% RCTs) with 4,012,555 participants were included. According to results, OBS participants were on average younger and had lower mean low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and mean fasting plasma glucose vs RCT participants. A significant association was seen between increased statin-associated T2D risk and OBS designs, younger baseline mean ages, lower concentrations of LDL-C, and high proportions of none or former smokers. In younger populations with lower LDL-C, possibly higher statin-associated T2D risk necessitates further investigation due to changing statin guidelines focusing on primary prevention populations.
