Evidence for cross-protection to subsequent febrile respiratory illness episodes from prior infections by different viruses among Singapore military recruits 2009-2014
The Journal of Infectious Diseases Feb 08, 2019
Chen ICM, et al. - Researchers investigated the presence of short-lived relative cross-protection between specific prior viral infections and subsequent febrile respiratory illness (FRI). They recruited Basic Military Training (BMT) intakes between December 2009 and December 2014, with the first FRI as the entry point. Using ResPlex II assays and real-time PCR assays, they detected viral pathogens in the samples collected. Then they performed survival analyses determining if infection with particular viruses conferred short-lived relative cross-protection against FRI. Outcomes revealed cross-protective effects of prior adenovirus and influenza virus infections to subsequent FRI episodes relative to other circulating viruses.
