Evidence for a new paradigm of gonorrhoea transmission: Cross-sectional analysis of Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections by anatomical site in both partners in 60 male couples
Sexually Transmitted Infections Apr 21, 2019
Cornelisse VJ, et al. - Researchers performed a cross-sectional analysis of gonorrhoea diagnosed by nucleic acid amplification tests in both partners in male couples, in order to study the transmission dynamics of gonorrhoea. At least one partner had gonorrhoea, and isolates had very high phylogenetic relatedness between partners, in all 60 couples (120 men). They observed gonorrhea positivity in the absence of urethral infection. This supports a new paradigm of gonorrhoea transmission, where the major source of gonorrhoea transmission was throat between men, through tongue kissing, oroanal sex and saliva use as anal lubricant. Findings thus highlight the necessity to address the risk of saliva exposure during sex in public health messages.
