Evaluation of umbilical cord entanglement as a predictive factor of adverse pregnancy outcomes: A meta-analysis
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Nov 10, 2019
Pergialiotis V, et al. - Researchers performed a systematic review in order to compile current data concerning the impact of umbilical cord entanglement on adverse pregnancy outcomes. Searching the Medline, Scopus, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials CENTRAL and Google Scholar databases, they included 20 studies with 267,233 pregnant women (50.103 with cord entanglement and 217,130 controls). Cases with cord entanglement exhibited an increased risk of neonatal Apgar score < 7 at the first minute of life. Significantly higher fetal distress was reported in the entanglement group. The incidence of fetal pH < 7.1 was also significantly higher in the entanglement group (RR 1.73, 95% CI 1.48, 2.03). This systematic review yielded sufficient evidence supporting the involvement of cord entanglement to adverse neonatal-perinatal outcomes.
