Evaluation of the effect of topical interferon α2b as a complementary treatment of macular edema of patients with diabetic retinopathy: A double- blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial study
Retina Apr 27, 2020
Afarid M, Meshksar A, Salehi A, et al. - Via performing a randomized controlled clinical trial including patients with diabetic macular edema, researchers here appraised the value of the topical interferon α2b (IFNα2b) as an adjunctive therapy in the therapy in these patients. They performed randomization of 50 eyes of 50 patients (one eye/patient), who were undergoing treatment for diabetic macular edema, to receive topical IFNα2b 1 MU/mL or artificial tear eye drop as an adjunctive therapy. The short-term effects of topical IFNα2b 1 MU/mL were evaluated in this study. The participants well tolerated the drug. Per outcomes, patients with diabetic macular edema may exhibit improvement of best-corrected visual acuity in correlation with receiving this drug. The studied eyes also had an intraocular pressure lowering in correlation with receiving the drug.
