Evaluation of selective laser trabeculoplasty as an intraocular pressure lowering option
Acta Ophthalmologica Mar 03, 2019
Belitsky Y, et al. - Given that selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is one of the many treatment options for lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma, researchers assessed the impact of SLT via collecting data from records of 289 patients who had SLT treatment during 2014 and 2015 at the Department of Ophthalmology, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Mölndal, Sweden. Also analyzed was the impact of surgeon's experience on the outcome of treatment. Findings revealed that the success rate at follow-up (within 100 days) was 52%. Investigators found that SLT was an effective treatment option for lowering IOP for many patients with glaucoma. It has also been effective in several subtypes of glaucoma. After treatment with SLT, however, not all patients had a significant reduction in IOP, and some may require further treatment. A significant difference was observed in outcome between surgeons with different levels of experience, but this difference could probably be explained by differences in treatment strategies and total energy used.
