Evaluation of hydroxychloroquine retinopathy using ultra-widefield fundus autofluorescence: Peripheral findings in the retinopathy

American Journal of Ophthalmology Sep 23, 2019

Ahn SJ, et al. - In this retrospective case series, researchers examined the application of ultra-widefield fundus autofluorescence (UWF-FAF; Optos®) imaging in assessing hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy and reported peripheral autofluorescence findings among Asian patients with this condition. The study sample consisted of 58 eyes of 29 patients with HCQ retinopathy. Data reported that most eyes with severe retinopathy in the nasal peripheral retina had the most extensive hypoautofluorescence. According to the severity of the retinopathy, peripheral autofluorescence findings varied in eyes with HCQ retinopathy. The UWF-FAF retinal results were functionally associated with the results of the visual field. In Asian patients, especially those with severe retinopathy, UWF-FAF may be helpful in assessing HCQ retinopathy.
