Estimating the prevalence of congenital heart disease among adolescents and adults in Colorado adjusted for incomplete case ascertainment
American Heart Journal Jan 23, 2020
Duca LM, Pyle L, Khanna AD, et al. - Given a rising prevalence of congenital heart defects (CHDs), the most frequent type of birth defect in the United States, in the general population, researchers estimated the prevalence of CHDs among adolescents and adults in Colorado from 2011 to 2013. They used five case-finding data sources. They identified 12,293 unique people with CHDs, including 2,481 adolescents and 9,812 adults, in one or more primary data sources. Among adolescents and adults in Colorado, the crude prevalence of CHDs was estimated to be 3.22 per 1000 individuals. The final capture-recapture model provided an estimated total adolescent and adult CHD population of 23,194 and an adjusted prevalence of 6.07 per 1,000 people, following accounting for incomplete case ascertainment, this suggests that 47% of the cases in the catchment area were not found in the case-identifying data sources. The requirement for additional specialized care facilities for adolescents and adults with CHDs is emphasized by the observed high prevalence rates.
