Estimated prevalence of hypertension and undiagnosed hypertension in a large inpatient population: A cross-sectional observational study
American Journal of Hypertension May 28, 2021
Mahdi A, Armitage LC, Tarassenko L, et al. - By performing this retrospective cross-sectional observational study in a UK hospital setting, researchers intended to estimate the prevalence of patients whose average blood pressures met current international guidelines for hypertension diagnosis. This analysis involved 41,455 eligible admitted patients with overall 1.7 million blood pressure measurements obtained during their hospital admissions. Findings revealed the presence of mean in-hospital blood pressures exceeding diagnostic thresholds for hypertension in large numbers of hospital inpatients, with no proof of diagnosis or treatment in the electronic record. Assessment is needed to determine the usefulness of opportunistic screening for in -hospital high blood pressure as a means to identify individuals with undiagnosed hypertension.
