Epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae: A 5-year experience at a tertiary care hospital

Infection and Drug Resistance Feb 28, 2019

Chotiprasitsakul D, et al. - Researchers investigated the epidemiology of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). Further, they compared risk factors and related mortality between non-susceptibility to ertapenem alone Enterobacteriaceae (NSEE), with non-susceptibility to other carbapenems (imipenem, meropenem, or doripenem) Enterobacteriaceae (NSOCE) at a tertiary care hospital in Thailand. Identifying all CRE isolated between December 2011 and December 2016, they noted a significant increase in the quarterly CRE incidence from 3.37 per 100,000 patient-days in the last quarter of 2011 to 32.49 per 100,000 patient-days in the last quarter of 2016. They noted an association of previous carbapenem use with NSOCE and a significant association of the hospital-wide carbapenem use with the increasing incidence of CRE.
