Epidemiology, characteristics, and survival of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer in Asia: A population-based study
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology May 22, 2019
Cheung KS, et al. - In this territory-wide retrospective cohort study involving 197,902 patients, researchers determined the features and predictive factors and survival of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer (CRC) in Hong Kong. The study participants were patients (aged ≥40 years) with colonoscopies performed between 2005 and 2013 without a history of CRCs, inflammatory bowel disease and prior colectomy. According to results, older age, male sex, history of colonic polyps, polypectomy/biopsy at index colonoscopy, surgical endoscopists and a higher center annual endoscopy volume were included predictive factors for PCCRC-3y. In Hong Kong, the PCCRC-3y rate was 7.9%, with a high proportion (> 80%) of distal cancers and higher cancer-specific mortality vs CRC detected. PCCRC-3y, proximal cancer location and certain patient factors were included independent predictive factors for cancer-specific mortality after CRC diagnosis.
