Epidemiology and burden of influenza in healthy children aged 6 to 35 months: Analysis of data from the placebo arm of a phase III efficacy trial

El Guerche-Séblain C, et al. - Using data from a recent phase 3 placebo-controlled influenza vaccine trial conducted in countries in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, the occurrence and burden of influenza in healthy children aged 6 to 35 months were determined to aid with influenza vaccination policy. Analysis of data from 2,210 participants indicated influenza-like illness (ILI) in 811 participants (36.7%). Among these, 263 virologically confirmed episodes of influenza were reported in 255 participants (31.4%). In healthy children there is a significant burden of influenza. In addition, the analysis revealed the frequent use of antibiotics (41.1%) in young children with influenza.
