Epidemiological risk factors and the geographical distribution of eight Mycobacterium species
BMC Infectious Diseases Mar 17, 2021
Donohue MJ, et al. - As there are over a hundred nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) species with differing pathogenicity, researchers sought to characterize the populations at risk for each species. Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio disease surveillance systems were assessed for retrieving demographic (age, gender, and state of residence) and microbiological data. The analysis was performed including NTM species with > 50 reports. Relative to females, males were identified to have significantly higher rates of M. chelonae, M. fortuitum, M. gordonae, and M. kansasii in analysis by gender. For most of the NTMs studied, the highest rates were observed in Mississippi. They observed no strong correlation of age with patient rates for several specific NTM species eg, M. chelonae.
