Epidemiological features of aortic stenosis in a French nationwide study: 10‐year trends and new challenges
Journal of the American Heart Association Dec 06, 2020
Grave C, Juillière Y, Tuppin P, et al. - Researchers focused on quantifying the burden of aortic stenosis (AS) in the hospital in France, reported patient characteristics, as well as assessed the death rate and temporal trends. Using death certificates, they found all AS‐related deaths between 2000 and 2014. In 2016, hospitalization for AS occurred in 26,071 patients. Between 2006 and 2016, a rise by 59% in the rate of patients hospitalized for AS was noted, reaching 38.7/100,000 person‐years in 2016. This rise was most pronounced in those aged > 75 years. An increase in the number of transcatheter aortic valve implantations was noted after their introduction in 2010. The age‐standardized death rate rose by 5% between 2000 and 2014, reaching 8.5/100 000 person‐years in 2014. Overall, in recent years, an increment in the rate of patients hospitalized for AS has been reported in line with the higher life expectancy and introduction of transcatheter aortic valve implantation. A more moderate rise in mortality was noted.
