Epidemiological features of aortic stenosis in a French nationwide study: 10‐year trends and new challenges
Journal of the American Heart Association Nov 27, 2020
Grave C, Juillière Y, Tuppin P, et al. - Using the national hospital discharge database, researchers analyzed all patients hospitalized for aortic stenosis (AS) in France between 2006 and 2016, to ultimately estimate the burden of AS in the hospital in France. They examined patient characteristics, and assessed the death rate and temporal trends. Hospitalizations of 26,071 patients for AS were documented in 2016. At 1 year postindex stay, the all‐cause death rate was estimated to be 11%. Between 2006 and 2016, a rise by 59% was evident in the rate of patients hospitalized for AS, reaching 38.7/100 000 person‐years in 2016. This increment was most pronounced in patients aged >75 years. An increase in the number of transcatheter aortic valve implantations was noted after their introduction in 2010. Between 2000 and 2014, an increase by 5% in the age‐standardized death rate was evident, reaching 8.5/100,000 person‐years in 2014. Overall, a rise in the rate of patients hospitalized for AS has been noted in recent years in line with the higher life expectancy and introduction of transcatheter aortic valve implantation. A more moderate increment in mortality was noted.
