Epidemiologic burden of meningococcal disease in Latin America: A systematic literature review
International Journal of Infectious Diseases May 17, 2019
Presa JV, et al. - In order to assess the epidemiologic profile of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD), meningococcal meningitis, and Neisseria meningitidis carriers in Latin America, researchers selected 39 studies for this systematic literature review. Results revealed that countries differ in terms of meningococcal surveillance in Latina America; most of these are based on passive sentinel surveillance. IMD incidence rates were highest and lowest in Brazil and Mexico, respectively. The highest case fatality rate was reported in Brazil (2006) and Chile (2012) in Latin America. In Brazil, Chile and Argentina, serogroups C, W and B were more often reported. Underreporting of cases may have led to an underestimation of the real burden of IMD in Latin America. They stress improving IMD diagnosis, notification, and registration to better describe the true IMD epidemiologic burden in Latin America.
