Emergency department provider perspectives on benzodiazepine-opioid co-prescribing: A qualitative study

Academic Emergency Medicine Sep 01, 2017

Kim HS, et al. – The experts undertook this study to identify the contexts in which benzodiazepine–opioid co–prescribing occurred and providers’ reasons for co–prescribing. They found that benzodiazepine–opioid co–prescribing occurred in specific clinical and situational contexts, like the treatment of low back pain or failed solitary opioid therapy in this qualitative study of emergency department (ED) providers. The decision to co–prescribe was strongly affected by a provider's beliefs and by self–imposed pressure to escalated care or avoid admission.
