Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae retesting and reinfection rates in New Zealand healthcare settings: Implications for sexually transmitted infection control

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Feb 12, 2020

Rose SB, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study analyzing data (2015–2017) concerning chlamydia and gonorrhea testing from 2 laboratories that provide community testing services for 4 higher-rate regions in the North Island of New Zealand in order to determine the retesting and reinfection rates of chlamydia or gonorrhea in these regions of New Zealand. Within the recommended period, retesting was reported in 34% (3,151/9,241) of the cohort; of these, 21% retested positive. The odds of retesting differed significantly by gender, age band, ethnic group, clinic type, and region. Significant differences in the odds of a subsequent positive on retesting within 6 months were observed by gender, age band, and ethnic group. As per findings, there are substantial gaps in the delivery of best-practice sexually transmitted infection management in New Zealand and there is a clear necessity to prioritize the implementation of clinic-level processes to assist clinicians in the routine delivery of best-practice sexual health care. They recommend including the routine provision of patient advice about retesting and strategies to improve timely and equitable access to retesting in these clinic-level processes.
