Elevated resting heart rate in adolescent men and risk of heart failure and cardiomyopathy

ESC Heart Failure May 06, 2020

Lindgren M, Robertson J, Adiels M, et al. - By conducting this nation‐wide, register‐based cohort investigation of all Swedish men registered for conscription in 1968–2005 (n = 1,008,363; mean age = 18.3 years), to examine the link of resting heart rate (RHR) ascertained in late adolescence with long‐term risk of cause‐specific heart failure (HF) and subtypes of cardiomyopathy (CM), with a particular emphasis on cardiorespiratory fitness. As part of the enlistment protocol, measurements of RHR and arterial blood pressure were taken together with anthropometrics. Findings revealed a link of adolescent RHR with future risk of HF, irrespective of related aetiological condition. The strongest link was reported for HF related to CM, driven by the link with dilated CM. A causal pathway between high RHR and myocardial dysfunction was suggested by these observations.
