Elective vs urgent in‐hospital transcatheter aortic valve implantation
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions Mar 23, 2021
Kabahizi A, Sheikh AS, Williams T, et al. - Researchers assessed procedural as well as mid‐term results of patients receiving elective vs urgent in‐hospital transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This study involved 1,157 patients who had TAVI between November 2007 and November 2019, including 975 (84.3%) who had elective while 182 (15.7%) who had urgent TAVI. Elective patients more commonly had predominant aortic stenosis, while predominant aortic regurgitation was more frequent in the urgent group. Similar implantation success was shown by elective (99.1%) and urgent group (99.4%). Both groups showed similar outcomes in terms of in‐hospital, 30 day, and 1 year mortality rates. Overall, experts concluded that it is possible to conduct urgent TAVI, undertaken on the index admission, at similar risk to elective outpatient TAVI in contemporary practice.
