Elastin content and distribution in endothelial keratoplasty tissue determines direction of scrolling
American Journal of Ophthalmology Jul 20, 2018
Mohammed I, et al. - Experts conducted a study to understand the reason for Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and pre-Descemets endothelial keratoplasty (PDEK) tissues to scroll with the endothelial cells (EC) outside. They measured the elastin content in Descemets membrane (DM), pre-Descemets layer (PDL), central and peripheral stroma, sclera and trabecular meshwork by the Fastin elastin assay kit. In DM, this pattern of elastin distribution explained why DMEK and PDEK tissues always scroll with the EC outside. EC was not seen to influence this behavior. A structural difference from the posterior stroma was suggested by high elastin content and uniform distribution in the PDL.
