Efficacy of the Spiration Valve System in patients with severe heterogeneous emphysema: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Respiration Nov 29, 2019
Majid A, Labarca G, Uribe JP, et al. - Researchers investigated whether Spiration Valve System (SVS) has efficacy and safety in patients with severe emphysema and hyperinflation, via a systematic review and meta-analysis. They explored PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane database until August 2019 in order to identify the relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The alteration in forced expiratory volume in 1 s, 6-min walking test, residual volume, modified medical research council and Saint George respiratory questionnaire, all-cause mortality, risk of pneumothorax, and risk of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was assessed via a meta-analysis. This study included four RCTs with 629 individuals. Findings revealed SVS as an alternative that demonstrated an improvement in pulmonary function, quality of life, and dyspnea score with an acceptable risk profile in patients having severe heterogeneous emphysema and hyperinflation without collateral ventilation.
