Efficacy of inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine in rural India: A 3-year cluster-randomised controlled trial

Sullender WM, et al. - Via a cluster-randomised, blinded, controlled study in three villages in India on 3,208 households, with 1,959 vaccine-eligible children, the researchers intended to investigate the protection of children through influenza vaccination and their household members in a resource-limited setting. Fever and tenderness at site were the most common reactions in both groups. However, no vaccine-related deaths occurred in either group. Against influenza infection, intramuscular trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine gave a variable direct and indirect protection. Therefore, indirect protection, during the year of highest direct protection was noted significant.
