Effects of prepregnancy body mass index, weight gain, and gestational diabetes mellitus on pregnancy outcomes: A population-based study in Xiamen, China, 2011–2018

Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Jul 19, 2019

Su W, et al. - Including all births in Xiamen, China, 2011–2018, this retrospective, population-based study was performed to determine the impacts of prepregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain (GWG), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on the risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes. From the Medical Birth Registry of Xiamen, researchers extracted demographic data and pregnancy outcomes of 73,498 women. The risk factors were assessed using multivariable logistic regression. Increased odds of cesarean, large for gestational age birth, and macrosomia were reported in relation to obesity prior to pregnancy, excessive GWG, and GDM. Findings revealed the requirement for blood glucose and weight control prior to and during pregnancy, and this could attenuate the complications of pregnancy.
