Effects of long-term macrolide therapy at low doses in stable COPD
International Journal of COPD Jun 15, 2019
Cao Y, et al. - Researchers assessed the effectiveness of long-term macrolide therapy at low doses in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), via this exploratory meta-analysis, wherein, they analyzed evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCT) which described long-term use of macrolides in COPD prevention. These studies were identified from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane database. Overall 10 articles were analyzed. As per the findings, the frequency of the acute exacerbation of COPD could be significantly attenuated with long-term low dose usage of macrolides. Although good tolerability of the treatment was evident, with few adverse reactions, but it was not suitable for the elderly. As a higher risk of acute exacerbation and mortality is seen in patients with GOLD grading C or D, these patients could be managed with this treatment regimen, as advised by the experts.
