Effects of exercise on muscle mass, strength, and physical performance in older adults with sarcopenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis according to the EWGSOP criteria
Experimental Gerontology May 28, 2021
Escriche-Escuder A, Fuentes-Abolafio IJ, Roldán-Jiménez C, et al. - Researchers investigated how exercise influences muscle mass, strength and physical performance among older adults with sarcopenia as per the EWGSOP (European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People) criteria. For this systematic review and meta-analysis, all relevant randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomised interventional studies were identified from major electronic databases. Finally, four RCTs and three non-randomised interventional studies comprising overall 235 patients with sarcopenia, were analyzed. Findings revealed that exercise exerted an impact on physical performance as well as on muscle strength but had an inconsistent influence on muscle mass. A low level of evidence in muscle mass, a low or moderate level of evidence in muscle strength and a high level of evidence in physical performance was demonstrated by the grading of recommendations assessment, development and evaluation criteria.
