Effectiveness and safety of selenium supplementation for type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults: A systematic review of randomised controlled trials
Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics Aug 08, 2019
Stróżyk A, Osica Z, Przybylak JD, et al. - As the role of selenium (Se) in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) remains unclear, the efficacy and safety of Se supplementation in adults with T2D (n = 241) were systematically evaluated by researchers in this analysis. They searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library up to April 2018 for randomized, controlled trials in which the efficacy of Se against a comparator on diabetes-related outcomes was assessed. According to results, none of the trials evaluated mortality, complications related to diabetes, non–HDL, blood pressure, and health-related quality of life. The impact on HDL and fasting plasma glucose was vague. Findings revealed that there is currently no evidence to support Se supplementation's effectiveness in the T2D population. Nausea was only one adverse event reported as a reason to discontinue the intervention, but the reporting was not accurate among the studies.
