Effect of standard vs intensive blood pressure control on the risk of recurrent stroke: A randomized clinical trial and meta-analysis
JAMA Neurology Aug 01, 2019
Kitagawa K, Yamamoto Y, Arima H, et al. - In this randomized clinical trial with 1,263 patients, researchers ascertained if intensive blood pressure (BP) control would result in fewer recurrent strokes vs standard BP control. This was a multicenter trial involving 140 Japanese hospitals. Compared with standard blood pressure control (< 140/90 mmHg), intensive blood pressure control to less than 120/80 mmHg tended to lower stroke recurrence. In an updated meta-analysis, intensive blood pressure treatment significantly lowered stroke recurrence by 22% after pooling this finding with the results of prior trials of intensive blood pressure control for secondary stroke prevention. In secondary stroke prevention, the updated meta-analysis supports a target BP less than 130/80 mmHg.
