Effect of recombinant human parathyroid hormone on rotator cuff healing after arthroscopic repair
Arthroscopy Mar 17, 2019
Oh JH, et al. - In this prospective propensity-matched study between January 2015 and June 2016, investigators delineated the outcome of teriparatide (a recombinant human parathyroid hormone) on rotator cuff healing following arthroscopic repair vs cases not treated with teriparatide. Subcutaneous injections of teriparatide 20 μg were administered daily for 3 months after surgery. They found no important difference of the retraction size, the anterior to posterior dimension of the torn rotator cuff, or the preoperative bone mineral density in both groups. They observed a lower rate of retear in group I as compared to in group II, 16% vs 33.9%, respectively. Hence, they suggested teriparatide, a systemic treatment choice which significantly enhanced the tendon-to-bone healing after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair for subjects with rotator cuff tears >2 cm.
