Effect of plain vs sugar-sweetened breakfast on energy balance and metabolic health: A randomized crossover trial
Obesity Mar 11, 2020
Carroll HA, Chen YC, Templeman IS, et al. - In this randomized crossover study involving 29 healthy adults (22 women), researchers examined the impact of 3 weeks of high-sugar (“Sweet”) vs low-sugar (“Plain”) breakfast on energy balance, metabolic health, and appetite. Pre- to postintervention changes in body mass were comparable between Plain and Sweet, as were pre- to postintervention changes for biomarkers of health and psychological appetite. The total intake of carbohydrates during Sweet was higher, driven more by higher sugar intake at breakfast than postbreakfast sugar intake. Candidates reported lessened sweet desire immediately after Sweet but not Plain breakfasts. Energy balance, health markers, and appetite did not respond to 3 weeks of high- or low-sugar breakfasts differently.
