Effect of long-term rigid gas-permeable contact lens wear on keratoconus progression
British Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 26, 2020
Araki S, Koh S, Kabata D, et al. - In this retrospective review, researchers examined the chronological corneal changes correlated with long-term rigid gas-permeable contact lens (RGP-CL) wear in patients with keratoconus (KC). For this investigation, they analyzed the clinical records of 405 patients with KC or with KC suspect. They classified patients with mild-to-moderate KC and uneventful follow-up into the CL (RGP-CL wear) and non-CL (without CL wear) groups. The CL and non-CL groups included 22 and 15 patients (31 and 20 eyes, respectively) who met the inclusion criteria. Based on 5–6 years of corneal tomographic assessment, the effects of long-term wear of RGP-CL had no effect on the progression of the KC.
