Effect of guideline-based therapy on left ventricular systolic function recovery after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction
The American Journal of Cardiology Aug 24, 2018
Abou R, et al. - Researchers assessed the evolution of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in 2,853 ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and were under guideline-based medical therapy. They excluded patients with prior myocardial infarction, re-infarction, coronary artery bypass grafting, or incomplete echocardiographic data at 6 months follow-up. Findings demonstrated a low prevalence of LVEF ≤ 40%. Normalization of LVEF after optimal medical therapy was observed in 39% of patients. Factors that showed independent association with LVEF recovery at follow-up included smaller enzymatic infarct size, baseline LVEF and absence of mitral regurgitation.
