Effect of diabetes mellitus and metformin on central corneal endothelial cell density in eye bank eyes
Cornea Jul 11, 2018
Chocron IM, et al. - By examining an eye bank corneal donor database, the researchers intended to ascertain whether metformin use and diabetes mellitus (DM) affects central corneal endothelial cell density (ECD). For this analysis, the Lions Eye Institute corneal donor database, which comprises 38,318 corneal samples, was investigated. It was found that lower ECD was correlated with DM. Researchers reported that lower ECD was not correlated with metformin use except in a subgroup of patients with glaucoma, in which subgroup analysis revealed lower ECD. They discovered that the differences in ECD observed were small and unlikely to affect the suitability for transplantation of donor corneas.
