Effect of blood transfusion on survival after hip fracture surgery
European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery & Traumatology May 18, 2018
Smeets SJM, et al. - Researchers investigated the incidence of erythrocyte blood transfusion (EBT) after hip fracture surgery and studied its impacts on perioperative complications and early and late mortality. The strongest predictor for EBT was the postoperative haemoglobin level. Even after adjustment for confounders, a significantly longer hospital stay and more postoperative cardiac complications were seen in patients who received EBT. Findings did not suggest any impact of EBT on mortality following correction with propensity scoring for predictors of EBT. In patients treated operatively for hip fracture, transfusion ought to be evenly matched with their cardiovascular risk during the perioperative phase.
