Effect of blood pressure control on long-term risk of end-stage renal disease and death among subgroups of patients with chronic kidney disease
Journal of the American Heart Association Aug 21, 2019
Ku E, Sarnak MJ, Toto R, et al. - Researchers examined how intensive blood pressure (BP) control affects kidney and death outcomes among subgroups of patients with chronic kidney disease divided by baseline proteinuria, glomerular filtration rate, age, and BMI. They studied 840 MDRD (Modification of Diet in Renal Disease) trial and 1067 AASK (African American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension) participants and identified intensive BP lowering as protective against the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and all-cause mortality. The subgroups of patients with chronic kidney disease were not uniform in displaying the benefits. However, in no subgroup, increased risk of ESRD or death was observed in correlation with intensive BP lowering.
