Effect of bicuspid aortic valve phenotype on progression of aortic stenosis
European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Imaging May 13, 2020
Shen M, Tastet L, Capoulade R, et al. - This study was undertaken to correlate the progression of aortic stenosis (AS) in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) or tricuspid aortic valve (TAV). This sub-analysis prospectively included a total of 141 patients with mild-to-moderate AS. Researchers compared baseline clinical, Doppler echocardiography and multidetector CT characteristics between BAV (n = 32) and TAV (n = 109) patients. The results of this study indicate that in individuals with mild-to-moderate AS, individuals with BAV have faster haemodynamic and anatomic progression of AS when compared to TAV patients with similar age and risk profile. This research indicates the utility and necessity to closely monitor individuals with BAV and to adequately control and treat their risk factors.
