Effect of an indwelling nasogastric tube on swallowing function in elderly post-stroke dysphagia patients with long-term nasal feeding
BMC Neurology May 04, 2019
Wang ZY, et al. - In this investigation, researchers studied if older patients' swallowing function is affected by a lengthy post-stroke placement of a nasogastric tube (NGT). There were 30 elderly post-stroke patients participating in the study who had a NGT for over 2 months. Before and 5 hours following removal of the NGT, a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) was performed. In elderly patients with post-stroke dysphagia, long-term placement of the NGT had a negative impact on the swallowing function, mainly seen in the pharyngeal phase. When no aspiration occurs during the VFSS, the NGT should be removed as soon as possible.
