Effect of aerobic and resistance exercise on cardiac adipose tissues: Secondary analyses from a randomized clinical trial
JAMA Cardiology Aug 28, 2019
Christensen RH, Wedell-Neergaard AS, Lehrskov LL, et al. - As epicardial and pericardial adipose tissues developed as crucial risk factors for cardiovascular disease, researchers ascertained if a 12-week endurance or resistance training intervention regulates epicardial and pericardial adipose tissue mass. The study sample consisted of 50 people with abdominal obesity who were physically inactive. The authors recorded a significant reduction in epicardial adipose tissue mass in correlation to endurance and resistance training by 32% and 24%, respectively. While pericardial adipose tissue mass was reduced by 32% in correlation to resistance training, there was no effect of endurance training on pericardial adipose tissue. These data suggested that different exercise modalities have potential preventive importance by means of reducing cardiac fat in people with abdominal obesity. After the 12-week trial period, other cardiometabolic outcomes remained unchanged.
