Early resumption of sex after voluntary medical male circumcision for HIV prevention within a programmatic delivery setting in Botswana
International Journal of STD & AIDS Oct 25, 2019
Pintye J, Wirth KE, Ntsuape C, et al. - In view of the recommendation of sexual abstinence for 6 weeks following voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) to ensure complete wound healing and to maximize the public health benefits of VMMC, researchers here examined a cohort of HIV-negative, sexually active men 18–49 years who underwent VMMC within a public-sector clinic in Botswana for the frequency and predictors of early resumption of sex. Data of 433 men on the sexual activity at 6 weeks post-VMMC revealed that 122/433 (28%) men had sexual intercourse within the 6 weeks since VMMC, of whom 36% reported inconsistent condom use. Multivariate analyses revealed two-fold higher likelihood of an early resumption of sexual activity among men aged < 30 years and men 30–34 years when compared with men ≥ 34 years. Relative to unemployed men, employed men more frequently resumed sexual activity early. These findings suggest the necessity for additional interventions to promote abstinence until complete wound healing.
