Early operative vs nonoperative treatment of fragility fractures of the pelvis: A propensity-matched multicenter study
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma Oct 30, 2019
Osterhoff G, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective study examining mortality and functional outcome in relation to early operative treatment vs nonoperative treatment of fragility fractures of the pelvis. Inclusion of 230 consecutive patients (60 years of age or older) with an isolated low-energy fracture of the pelvis was done. Death was reported for 105/230 (45.7%) patients at the final follow-up (mean 61 months, SD 24). They identified a higher mortality rate and complication rate at 1 year but a better long-term survival after more than 2 years in correlation to early operative fixation of patients who cannot be mobilized within 3–5 days. Hence, surgery may not benefit patients with a life expectancy of less than 2 years from with regard to survival.
