Early morbidity but not mortality increase with surgery delayed greater than 24 hours in patients with a periprosthetic fracture of the hip
Journal of Arthroplasty Jun 20, 2019
Boddapati V, et al. - Through the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program registry, all 857 patients who underwent surgical intervention for hip periprosthetic fractures (PPF) were identified by the researchers and assessed for the effect of time to surgery on rates of thirty-day complications. Longer total and postoperative length of stay in patients with non-expedited surgery were noted. However, no statistical difference in mortality could be identified, but an association with increased postoperative complications and non-expedited surgery for PPF was found. For the identification of the causative factors behind this association, additional prospective studies could be assured.
