Early mobilization of trauma patients admitted to intensive care units: A systematic review and meta-analyses
Injury Sep 14, 2019
Higgins SD, et al. - Researchers examined how early mobilization (EM) affects mortality, hospital and ICU length of stay, and duration of mechanical ventilation among trauma patients admitted to the ICU. A systematic review of 4 electronic databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library) and the grey literature yielded only nine articles for inclusion in the analysis, indicating that the effects of EM in trauma ICU patients have been investigated in only a few studies. Study cohorts ranged from 15 to 1,132 patients (median 63) and displayed differences in their inclusion criteria. Outcomes suggest fewer days of mechanical ventilation among trauma ICU patients who were mobilized early vs those receiving usual care. The groups were similar in terms of mortality rate and length of stay.
