Early extubation followed by immediate noninvasive ventilation vs standard extubation in hypoxemic patients: A randomized clinical trial
Intensive Care Medicine Dec 13, 2018
Vaschetto R, et al. - Researchers ascertained whether noninvasive ventilation (NIV) after early extubation reduces the duration of invasive mechanical ventilation (i-MV) and intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS) in patients recovering from hypoxemic acute respiratory failure. They randomly assigned the highly selected non-hypercapnic hypoxemic patients to receive NIV after early or standard extubation. The days spent on invasive ventilation without affecting ICU LOS were reduced by the early extubation followed by immediate NIV application in highly selected hypoxemic patients.
