Early epithelial remodeling after standard and iontophoresis-assisted corneal cross-linking as evaluated by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography
Journal of Refractive Surgery Aug 16, 2018
Atia R, et al. - In this prospective, observational study, researchers assessed and compared epithelial remodeling following standard corneal cross-linking (S-CXL) and iontophoresis-assisted CXL (I-CXL) in eyes with keratoconus by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). Subjects scheduled for surgery underwent AS-OCT and corneal topography before and 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery. Findings showed S-CXL was followed by the occurrence of significant epithelial remodeling that led to a thinner, more regular thickness profile than after I-CXL. In order to monitor the efficacy of CXL in progressive keratoconus, an adjunctive follow-up tool could be epithelial thickness profile measurements after I-CXL.
