Durability of posterior wall isolation after catheter ablation among patients with recurrent atrial fibrillation
Heart Rhythm May 12, 2020
Markman TM, Hyman MC, Kumareswaran R, et al. - Given a growing use of electrical posterior wall isolation (PWI) for the management of patients suffering from atrial fibrillation (AF), but the existence of little data on the durability of PWI employing current technology led researchers to perform this single center retrospective cohort study to characterize the frequency as well as location of posterior wall reconnection at the time of repeat catheter ablation for AF. Participants were 50 patients receiving repeat AF ablation following prior PWI. Findings revealed posterior wall reconnection in 40% of patients receiving repeat ablation after an index PWI. Repeat ablation was needed earlier in patients with posterior wall reconnection, and these patients had a greater chance of experiencing atypical atrial flutter. The most common site of posterior wall reconnection was the roof of the left atrium.
