Dry eye and quantitative and qualitative changes of meibomian glands in patients with pemphigus
Cornea Aug 08, 2020
Kiyat P, Palamar M, Gerceker Turk B, et al. - Among 20 left eyes of 20 patients with pemphigus [group 1; mean age 51.8 ± 11.1 (range: 32–73)] and 20 left eyes of 20 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers [group 2; mean age 50.4 ± 9.6 years (range: 32–70)], researchers sought to assess dry eye and quantitative and qualitative changes of meibomian glands with meibography. Dry eye was assessed with Oxford scale scoring, tear film breakup time, Schirmer 1 tests, and Ocular Surface Disease Index score assessments. The Ocular Surface Disease Index scores in group 1 were higher than in group 2 and the variations were statistically significant. In group 1, upper eyelid, lower eyelid, and total eyelid meiboscore values were significantly higher. There were significant differences in the results of dry eye tests and meibomian gland morphology between patients with pemphigus and those who were healthy. Patients with pemphigus should be checked for dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction and treated immediately to prevent serious dry eye results.
