Donning gloves before surgical gown eliminates sleeve contamination
Journal of Arthroplasty Jan 23, 2019
Byrd WA, et al. - In this comparative study, researchers tested the premise that donning under gloves before the surgical gown will decrease if sleeve contamination is not eliminated. For this investigation, they evaluated the differences in gown contamination between three different gown and glove donning techniques. Study participants ranged in experience level from PGY1 to attending. Each participant covered his hands with ultraviolet (UV) light revealing lotion and then donned surgical gown and gloves with their preferred technique and with the proposed technique in a randomly assigned order. For distance and quantity of sleeve contamination, the gowns were then removed and analyzed under UV light. Regardless of experience level, the glove first technique shows zero sleeve contamination throughout all samples. They observed that the contamination distance on the right sleeve is significantly greater than on the left. In contrast to the currently accepted closed and open techniques, the use of this glove and gown donning technique in order to reduce the contamination of the gown was strongly recommended.
