Does child maltreatment predict alcohol use disorders in young adulthood? A cohort study of linked notifications and survey data
Addiction Oct 25, 2019
Kisely S, et al. - Researchers examined how prospectively substantiated child maltreatment is associated with problem alcohol use in adulthood. Using a prospective cohort record linkage correlational design, they analyzed data from a statutory child protection agency of prospectively substantiated child maltreatment associated with a birth cohort from a major metropolitan maternity hospital in the setting of the Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy in Brisbane, Australia. At the 21-year follow-up, 169 of the 3,762 young people (4.5%) reported a history of substantiated maltreatment by 16 years. The analysis revealed a positive correlation of prospectively identified experience of childhood emotional abuse and neglect with problem alcohol use at age 21.
