Does access to healthy food vary according to socioeconomic status and to food store type?: An ecologic study
BMC Public Health Jun 22, 2019
Costa BVL, et al. - Among the users of the Health Academy Program (the public health promotion program in Brazil), researchers determined if store types and the socioeconomic status of the users resulted in differential access to healthy foods. Overall 336 stores were investigated, most of them being specialty fruit and vegetable markets/stores or open-air food markets. Findings revealed a link between access to healthy food and the food store type. Healthy food store index values increased by 0.12 and 0.07, respectively, with an increase of 1% in the availability of specialized fruits and vegetable markets or open-air food markets and supermarket. Therefore, implementation of stores of better quality, such as specialty fruit and vegetable markets and open-air food markets, should be a priority for public food supply policies directed at enhancing the diet quality of the population and attenuating inequality in access.
